Staples don't have to be boring!
California Grown Japonica! Chico Rice is a medium grain rice originating from Japan and is organically and sustainably grown, milled and packed in California. Having an on site mill allows the rice to be milled as needed, keeping it fresh and far superior to the rice found on most grocery store shelves which has lost moisture and much of it's flavor.
Chico's Blonde Rice is unique in that the bran layer of the rice is lightly removed, keeping many of the health benefits of brown rice intact while giving it the sweetness and quick cooking time of white rice. It works beautifully for sushi (if you're up for the challenge) and has turned us into white rice fans!
Chico's Brown Rice has a nuttier and deeper flavor profile than the Blonde. Its quite easy to work with and ends up with texture and flavor that add an extra bit of "oomph" where other brown rice comes up short. Rather than blending into the background of a bowl, it becomes a piece you notice and savor!
Chico Rice is a reminder that not all rice is created equal. Having a staple like rice that is planted, harvested and milled by a father and son team is truly special. Most of the rice in the world is processed on mills shared by many different farms and then stored for up to five years. There is little traceability and freshness and flavor often leave much to be desired. We are happy to be consuming a simple but important staple with intention and to support Tom and Carter in their effort to do things a little differently.
